Hip-Hop and Science Collide Again this Friday

A few seasons ago on StarTalk Radio we had a pair of episodes: The Science of Hip-Hop with GZA Part 1 and Part 2 featuring legendary musician and science-lover GZA of The Wu-Tang Clan. The episodes featured a great interview between Neil and GZA where they discussed creativity, the universe, and even had the pair spitting a cosmic verse. It also featured Chuck Nice and Columbia Assistant Professor of Science Education and hip-hop culture expert Dr. Christopher Emdin. If you haven’t listened to those episodes yet, please do.

The reason behind that reminder is because this week on StarTalk Radio we’re back exploring the fusion of hip-hop and science. Neil deGrasse Tyson welcomes rapper Logic to his office to discuss hip-hop, science, and much more. In-studio, Neil is joined by comic co-host Chuck Nice and rapper/educator/DJ Steve Tyson, a.k.a. The Intellect, who also happens to be Neil’s nephew!

During his interview with Neil, you’ll hear about Logic’s upbringing, his geek underbelly, his unique perspective on life and how it developed, his new album, Everybody, on which Neil lends his voice, and much more. In-studio, Neil, Chuck, and Steve discuss the legacy of violence and hip-hop, the culture of hip-hop and rap, the intersection of hip-hop and science, and much more.

This was one of my favorite StarTalk episodes in recent times, so I don’t want to give too much away. Not that there are any big spoilers, but just that the whole episode is worth the listen. Being a fan of hip-hop, specifically rap, since I was in middle school, it was great to hear the conversation with Logic and the discussion between Neil, Steve, and Chuck. Steve provided some great insight about hip-hop culture and hearing about Logic’s creative process was really interesting.

If you’re a fan of hip-hop, rap, science, all of the above, or just great conversation, this episode is for you.

Please join us tomorrow night for Geekin’ Out on Hip-Hop, with Logic at 7pm EDT right here on our website, as well as on Apple Podcasts, Google Play Music, SoundCloud, Stitcher, and TuneIn. And if you’re an All-Access subscriber, you can listen to this episode ad-free at 7pm, too.

That’s it for now. Keep Looking Up!
