Get Cosmically Inspired this Sunday with Neil deGrasse Tyson and artist Peter Max

This Sunday, we’re replaying an overlooked gem of an episode from our very first season, which has been available only as a digital download for a few years now.

It’s called “A Universe of Inspiration” and it features Neil deGrasse Tyson’s interview with pop artist Peter Max.

Recorded in the artist’s NYC studio, the two chat about how the cosmos not only inspired Peter, but in fact, was the key to his successful career. You’ll hear how Peter was also inspired by hearing Neil talk about astronomy and the universe.

Back in the studio, Neil and comic co-host Lynne Koplitz talk about how science has inspired art throughout history, from Leonardo de Vinci to Vincent van Gogh to Georgia O’Keefe. (Warning: the discussion of O’Keefe’s art has some adult content.) You’ll hear how Leonardo robbed graves and pealed away the skin to study human anatomy… a practice not as dissimilar as some would like to the controversial “Bodies” exhibition which Neil and Lynn discuss.

Back in Season One, long before Bill Nye the Science Guy had become a StarTalk host in his own right, he would frequently stop by StarTalk to do his signature “Bill Nye Minutes.” In this case, it’s about how astronomy inspires artists.
