We Take a Look at Women in Science with Two Stellar Women Scientists
On this episode, astrophysicist Summer Ash and astronomer Emily Rice, alongside comic co-host Chuck Nice, are sharing their take on “Women Crushing It Wednesday” by reclaiming a sexist hashtag and celebrating women in STEM and examining challenges that women in science face.
This episode was recorded right after the most recent United States presidential election so it’s not surprising that the first question out of the gate was how to stay motivated in the face of sexism, ugliness, and hurt. Re-visiting conversations from this distinct time are very interesting to me because you can feel the raw emotion in conversation. With an election that shocked, scared, and flabbergasted most people, there was a lot of raw emotion being shared and it’s something worth re-visiting.
We also discuss how underrepresentation of woman and minorities in science is a reflection of the world as a whole, but we look at how it’s more difficult to deal with scientists because they think they’re acting rationally. You’ll find out, despite its obvious downfalls, how the Internet has helped more women in science find support communities. We also answer some other Cosmic Queries on climate change and climate deniers, scientific literacy, and black holes.
If you like Summer and Emily together, don’t forget to check out our episode Science Gets Fabulous, with Summer Ash and Emily Rice where Summer and Emily discuss science fashion and the science behind fashion.
