Two Opportunities for Looking Up in June

worldwide solstice festival

We wanted to give you a heads up about a couple of fun, free events that are coming up in June.

Astronomy Night at the Intrepid – June 5

First, our friends at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum here in NYC are holding another free Astronomy Night. This one’s called “Astronomy on Deck with Mason Peck” on June 5, 2015. Mason is the director of Cornell University’s Space Systems Design Studio and former chief technologist for NASA. According to the museum, you’ll get to “Discover how you too can build and launch your own spacecraft [using CubeSat technology] to join the thousands of people around the world now making space their own.” Dr. Peck’s presentation is from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm in the Space Shuttle Pavilion.

The event is free, but registration is required. Guests will have access to the Space Shuttle Pavilion and, if the weather cooperates, get to see the heavens through telescopes on the flight deck. There are sure to be plenty of amateur astronomers and members of the StarTalk Cosmic Community on hand manning the scopes, so make sure you say hello.

Worldwide Solstice Festival – June 21

This is a global event, and you can find out more about events being held near you by checking out the Facebook page.

But if you’re in our neck of the woods, then you might be interested in attending the event being held at the Westport Library from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on June 21, 2015 on Jesup Green in Westport, CT. Cosmic Community members including the Westport Astronomical Society, The Sidewalk Astronomers of New Haven and the Boothe Memorial Astronomical Society will all be participating. According to an organizer, you’re in store for an afternoon of yoga, drum circles, and solar telescopes with safe views of the sun as well as daytime views of Jupiter and Venus.

According to the calendar listing at The Westport Library, there will even be… drones!

And remember… if you’re a member of our Cosmic Community and have an event you’d like us to share, please email [email protected].

That’s it for now. Keep Looking Up!
