Sunday’s StarTalk Live!: Smart Timing at the Bell House
One of the most enjoyable aspects of our StarTalk Live! performances is that they are often very timely.
The Blizzard of 2013 (Winter Storm Nemo) hit the day after our Bell House show about “Storms of Our Century,” and onstage that night we had Dr. Adam Sobel, a professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia.
And the first time I went to StarTalk Live!, at the Bell House, it was for “The Particle Party.” Barely a week earlier, physicists at CERN had announced the discovery, and that night, one of those physicists, Kyle Cranmer, was our guest on stage.
But perhaps the most timely StarTalk Live! we ever had was on September 21, 2014, the day of the “People’s Climate March” in New York City and numerous other cities around the world.
Earlier that day, hundreds of thousands of people had flooded Manhattan to express their concerns about climate change.
And that night, StarTalk Live! fans gathered at The Bell House in Brooklyn, NY to watch guest host Bill Nye the Science Guy and co-host Eugene Mirman and their guests discuss the subject that was on everybody’s mind.
Our science guest was Dr. Cynthia Rosenzweig, a climatologist with the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and a member of the Nobel Prize winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC.
Dr. Rosenzweig is one of the world’s leading experts on the impact of climate change, and, together with Bill Nye, whose next book, Unbounded, is about the same subject, laid out the very compelling facts to the packed house.
In another bit of luck, one of our guest comedians, Jemaine Clement, hails from New Zealand, a part of the world where the impact of climate change is being felt relatively dramatically. And of course, the rest of our panel, including guest comedian Michael Che, live in New York City, which, as you’ll hear in the show, is on the forefront of cities dealing with climate change – at least since Sandy hit.
If anything, the issues of global warming, melting glaciers, coastal flooding, greenhouse gasses and CO2 levels have grown even more timely since that night, and those of you who weren’t with us at The Bell House for the show can catch up on it this Sunday, August 23 at 7:00 PM ET on our website, iTunes, Stitcher, SoundCloud and TuneIn.
By the way, we have two upcoming StarTalk Live! shows for which you can still get seats. Who knows what new discovery, trending topic or impending event our hosts and guests will discuss on stage?
StarTalk Live! at the Beacon Theatre in NYC 9/21
Hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson with co-host Eugene Mirman and special guests.
StarTalk Live! in Austin Texas, 11/5/15
Presented by ACL Live and Fun Fun Fun Fest

That’s it for now. Keep Looking Up!
