What Is StarTalk Playing with Science?
What puts the line in “line drive”? What causes a tennis ball, endowed with top spin, to skip like a school child? What causes a football to spiral like a galaxy? The answers and so much more are what make StarTalk Playing with Science entertaining, informative, and addicting.
StarTalk Playing with Science teases out the science behind some of sport’s most iconic moments, to explore how and why the play happened. The show explores the seldom-considered marriage of science and sport. And just like StarTalk uses pop culture as the launch pad for science discussion and education, StarTalk Playing with Science uses the passion and excitement of sports to do the same. Show topics range from the physics behind Franco Harris’ “Immaculate Reception” in the 1972 AFC Division Playoff, arguably the most famous play in NFL football history, to the science behind a forty-foot set shot by NBA superstar Steph Curry. We’ll also cover advancements in sports technology like those that helped the record-breaking speed of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, or aided NY Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. in making the “greatest catch” in NFL history.
